Coverage, System by System

We publish a town page only where the EPA data actually names a community water system that supplies most of the town. Where it does not, we would rather have no page than a wrong one.

The short version

SoftenWell routes water softener calls by ZIP code across the states it covers, and names the utility serving each town along with whether it draws ground or surface water. Coverage stops where that information stops.

SoftenWell is a referral service, not an installer. We connect homeowners with independent contractors. Contractors are required to hold whatever credential their state or municipality demands. Every state page sets out who licenses plumbers there and where to check, so you can confirm before work begins. We install nothing, we sell no equipment, we do not set prices, and we never charge homeowners anything — the contractors in our network pay us when we route them a call.

The footprint2,102 towns, 38 states

925 of these towns are supplied by ground water and 1,177 by surface water. The split matters because it is the best free predictor of hardness: ground water has had time against rock, and rock is where calcium and magnesium come from.

Why some towns are missingA deliberate gap

The EPA file does not name a community water system for every town, and in some places the largest system it does name serves only a handful of homes — which usually means most households there are on private wells. Naming a fifty-connection system as the town's supplier would be false, so those towns get no page. If yours is one of them, the well water page is the relevant one.
