How This Is Paid For

The short version

Find your published hardness figure before telephoning anybody, because a softener specified without one has been specified on a guess. The introduction costs the household nothing: SoftenWell is paid by the contractor who takes the call rather than by the person making it.

SoftenWell is a referral service, not an installer. We connect homeowners with independent contractors. Contractors are required to hold whatever credential their state or municipality demands. Every state page sets out who licenses plumbers there and where to check, so you can confirm before work begins. We install nothing, we sell no equipment, we do not set prices, and we never charge homeowners anything — the contractors in our network pay us when we route them a call.

Before calling anyone, get the hardness figure from your utility's annual water quality report. Your town page names the system that supplies you.

TwoDo the arithmetic

Water per person, times grains per gallon, times people. That gives grains per day, which is what a softener's rated capacity has to cover.

The number on this site connects you to an independent contractor covering your area. We pass on what you tell us. We do not quote, schedule or supervise the work, and we are not a party to the agreement you reach.

FourOr do not call

If your water is soft, or if the problem turns out to be iron rather than hardness, the right outcome is no installation. Routing a household that does not need the work wastes your money and burns the contractor's time.
